HALAL MEALS ON WHEELS
A Comprehensive Social Outreach and Support Program
Where We Started:
The Program was launched in 2019, and was established to support older, diverse community members particularly those who are isolated, underserved, or chronically disabled. HMOW began with 45 clients and has now grown to serve more than 600 older adults and their families throughout the county. AMSS outreach efforts have been strategically focused on zip codes with high concentrations of communities of color experiencing significant health disparities.
The program is implemented by teams of AMSS Multicultural Health and Long-Term Care Outreach Ambassadors, who provide friendly phone calls, home visits, and bi-weekly deliveries of hot halal meals. To further ensure proper nutrition for seniors and their families, these deliveries also include non-perishable food items and fresh produce.
In addition, AMSS distributes gift cards and food baskets during the holy month of Ramadan and at other special holiday events. AMSS Ambassadors regularly assess clients’ needs and connect them with available county and community resources.
